A new ‘Element’: Light

January 21st, 2014 by Administrator | Posted in Events and Exhibitions, General, The Artists at Work |

After taking a bit of a break from weaving in 2013 and spending most of his time painting (much to our dismay!), Alibay has returned to the loom to work on a fifth element: Light. Below is a picture of the cartoon he painted, which will be his template on the loom. The tapestry should get ready in time for the 2014 Architectural Digest Home Design Show in March!

Re-make of John 15:5

March 22nd, 2013 by Administrator | Posted in Events and Exhibitions, General, The Artists at Work |

Today, the re-make of John 15:5 was picked up by its happy new owner. Remember, Alibay had to re-create the cartoon, since it had been destroyed in the first making. The new piece is a little bolder in colors compared to the 2009 version, and entirely glorious! Luckily, our client appreciates the fact that each re-making of a motif will yield a different result! Here it is!

Elements – Earth

Earth is still on the loom, too, so Alibay has to finish both Earth and Fire before coming to NYC! Keep your fingers crossed!

Elements – Fire

Fire turned out to be the biggest challenge. Alibay first painted a cartoon that he then considered un-weavable, and so had to go back to the design board. The second design is now on the frame being woven! 19 days to go until he has to get on the plane to come to NYC…

Elements – Air

February 10th, 2013 by Administrator | Posted in Events and Exhibitions, General, The Artists at Work |

This is ‘Air’, still strung on the loom. It was woven ‘sideways’, so I have rotated the photo for better perspective. It looks a bit off, since the photo is not taken straight-on, so in case you feel a little ‘airy’ trying to make sense of it, don’t worry – it comes with the subject! 😉

Elements – Water

Here is a first glance at ‘Water’, one of the 4 free form tapestries that will make up ‘Elements’, our center piece for the Architectural Digest Home Design Show. It is magical, and I can’t wait to see it together with ‘Earth’, ‘Fire’ and ‘Air’!

Remake of John 15:5

December 19th, 2012 by Administrator | Posted in The Artists at Work |

We received a commission for a remake of John 15:5 (‘I am the Vine, you are the Branches’). The piece was originally made in 2009 for a Lutheran Church, and Alibay had since ‘messed up’ (his own words) the template. So in order to re-create the work, he had to actually repaint the cartoon! Weaving progress on this piece is slow, since it is all color gradation, which gives it it’s unique magical, almost 3-dimensional depth. I hope he can finish both this commission and ‘Elements’ in time for the big March show!

A first glance at ‘Elements’

November 11th, 2012 by Administrator | Posted in The Artists at Work |

Alibay is working on a special new piece for the 2013 Architectural Digest Home Design Show. It will be called ‘Elements’, and will be a composition of 4 free form tapestries. Here is a first rough sketch of the work. I think it will be spectacular!

Does a tapestry have to be rectangular?

September 4th, 2012 by Administrator | Posted in Events and Exhibitions, The Artists at Work |

That’s what I asked Saule and Alibay. Of course, the loom lends itself to tapestries being rectangular, but as you can see from examples like ‘Eternity’, things don’t always have to be entirely straight and edgy!

So I challenged the Bapanovs to come up with an installation of four individual free-form tapestries for the Architectural Digest Home Design Show in 2013. Four pieces whose form will be an integral part of expressing the underlying concept, and also interact with each other. They have accepted the challenge, and I’ll keep you posted of what’s happening in Almaty with the creative process! If I can get them to send me photos, that is…

Day 2 AD Show: Two little demo pieces, and a fresh start!

March 23rd, 2012 by Administrator | Posted in Events and Exhibitions, The Artists at Work |

Check out how Alibay cut the two little demo pieces off the loom, and restrung it today to start a new one. The little horse is very cute (that was the second piece) – alas, he forgot to weave in his logo! The first piece is a bit crooked – he started it at the OOAK Show in NYC in November of 2010, and forgot to bring his weighted beater with him to tighten the weave. So it’s pretty loose at the beginning, and much tighter later on, a little funky. Well, it worked to show the process!

Restringing took a lot longer than I thought, another step of the process I came to appreciate even more when witnessing it first hand – and all that on such a small loom! Don’t want to imagine what it’s like to string the big one. Alibay then did a quick rough sketch for a new piece, and mounted it inside the loom. He even had time for the edge and the first couple of rows! We’ll keep you posted!
