First Day at Architectural Digest Show

March 21st, 2013 by Administrator | Posted in Events and Exhibitions, General |

Here are some impressions of our booth this year, and a full take on ‘Elements’! It’s absolutely fabulous, and is getting a lot of attention! (Despite the many partial power losses our Aisle had today – what was up with that? Lights out at an exhibition? Not ideal!)

Elements – Earth

Earth is still on the loom, too, so Alibay has to finish both Earth and Fire before coming to NYC! Keep your fingers crossed!

Elements – Fire

March 1st, 2013 by Administrator | Posted in Events and Exhibitions, General, The Artists at Work |

Fire turned out to be the biggest challenge. Alibay first painted a cartoon that he then considered un-weavable, and so had to go back to the design board. The second design is now on the frame being woven! 19 days to go until he has to get on the plane to come to NYC…

Elements – Air

February 10th, 2013 by Administrator | Posted in Events and Exhibitions, General, The Artists at Work |

This is ‘Air’, still strung on the loom. It was woven ‘sideways’, so I have rotated the photo for better perspective. It looks a bit off, since the photo is not taken straight-on, so in case you feel a little ‘airy’ trying to make sense of it, don’t worry – it comes with the subject! πŸ˜‰

Elements – Water

Here is a first glance at ‘Water’, one of the 4 free form tapestries that will make up ‘Elements’, our center piece for the Architectural Digest Home Design Show. It is magical, and I can’t wait to see it together with ‘Earth’, ‘Fire’ and ‘Air’!

Architectural Digest Home Design Show 2013

July 3rd, 2012 by Administrator | Posted in Events and Exhibitions, General |

We are happy to report that we will be back at the AD Show next March.

The whole show was re-juried, so no exhibitor could automatically renew their contract. Well, the jury decided, and we were invited back! So we’ll see you next March! Never hurts to plan ahead: The show takes place March 21 – 24, Pier 94 in NYC, and we’ll still be in booth M107. We’re already starting the planning! More on that soon!

Here is one new felt for the AD Show!

March 12th, 2012 by Administrator | Posted in Events and Exhibitions, General |

Alibay is working on a couple of felts for the Architectural Digest Home Design Show, and here is a snapshot from his studio of one of them. Don’t know the title yet, don’t know the exact dimensions (should be large enough to cover a king size bed) – but it sure looks cool!

See you in 10 days at the show!

Sacred Tree 2012

January 12th, 2012 by Administrator | Posted in Events and Exhibitions, General |

Take a look at this incredible new version of Sacred Tree. Alibay first designed this motif in 1998, and I recently asked him to revisit it. And what a result! The piece is absolutely magnetic. The background is a fantastic mix of blues, purples, and greens, (when I asked him about this, he shrugged his shoulders and said he could not find any black… soooo Alibay!!!), and the crisp colors of the Tree and all its glorious details are nothing short of magnificent. As usual, the photo does not do it justice! This will be our anchor piece at the Architectural Digest Show is March in NYC!

Just a little background about the story of Sacred Tree: Many cultures have myths and legends about a Tree of Life in their folk lore, and the Kazakh nomads are no different. The tree carries and supports all life in its branches, and bears abundant fruit itself. This particular tree, however, also contains a hint to a different tale from Kazakh mythology: The bird of paradise perched on top of the tree is Samruk, in Kazakh mythology a symbol of regeneration and the circle of life. Samruk every spring lays a golden egg, symbolizing the sun, in the nest of the Tree of Life, Baiterek, and every winter when Samruk flies away, a snake eats the egg, completing the circle of life, which starts anew with Samruk returning again in the spring. Check out the nest and the snake!
